Only the Colorado Avalanche has more man-games lost than the Penguins from 2009-2016,[1] and because the Pittsburgh Penguins are constantly injured, injuries needs its own section of the wiki.

Mon 8 Oct 2018: Matt Murray was injured with concussion during a team practice. The injury was announced October 9th via the Penguins' Twitter.

Sat 13 Oct 2018: Matt Murray dressed as backup for the game against the Habs. He did not go in, Casey DeSmith played the full game. In the first period, Justin Schultz had to be helped off the ice after a hit against the boards, when his left ankle seemed to buckle awkwardly. He later had surgery to repair a left lower-leg fracture & he expected to be out for 4 months.

Sat 27 Oct 2018: Kris Letang seemed injured from a knee-on-knee hit. He went to the dressing room for medical treatment, but returned to the game soon after. Derick Brassard was scratched from the game due a lower-body injury he had been trying to play through. The date of the injury was not reported.

Mon 29 Oct 2018: Kris Letang left practice early due to a "nagging injury" suffered during Saturday's game. He was a "game time decision" & did not play in Tuesday's game again the New York Islanders. Derick Brassard was absent from practice & was ruled out for the game.

Thurs 1 Nov 2018: Kris Letang returned to the lineup

Wed 14 Nov 218: Sidney Crosby was being evaluated for an upper-body injury and was a game-time decision for the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on the 15th. He is expected to be out approximately a week.

Sat 17 Nov 2018: Derick Brassard returned to the line-up

Mon 19 Nov 2018: Matt Cullen was apparently injured during the game against the Ottawa Senators. He had ice on his ankle after the game, but the specific injury has not been reported.

Wed 21 Nov 2018: Sidney Crosby returned to the line-up & scored one goal & 2 assists against the Dallas Stars.

Thur s 22 Nov 2018: Matt Murray was placed on IR while dealing with an ongoing lower-body injury for the "last couple of weeks," according to coach Mike Sullivan.

Tues 4 Dec 2018: Dominik Simon was injured during the game against the Avalanche & exited the game early. He did not return.

Thurs 6 Dec 2018: Patric Hornqvist left the game versus the Islanders late in the first period with an "undisclosed" injury & did not return.

Fri 7 Dec 2018: Dominik Simon was officially placed on IR, meaning that he would be out for at least the next 3 games

Wed 12 Dec 2018: Matt Cullen returned to the line-up. Matt Murray was also activated off IR, but served as DeSmith's back-up instead of starting the game.

Wed 19 Dec 2018: Patric Hornqvist rejoined the lineup. Jamie Oleksiak exited the game against the Capitals, after a right hook from Tom Wilson. He was later diagnosed with a concussion.

Thurs 20 Dec 2018: Dominik Simon returned to the line-up for the game against the Wild.

Fri 4 Jan 2019: Jamie Oleksiak returned to the lineup in a game against the Jets

Wed 9 Jan 2019: Zach Aston-Reese was placed on IR for an upper-body injury, as announced by a post-practice interview by his coach Mike Sullivan. It was later announced that he had a broken left hand.

Thurs 10 Jan 2019: Patric Hornqvist was placed on IR for an concussion. He was struck in the face by a puck during the game on the 8th, after just 3:17 minutes of playing time.

Sat 19 Jan 2019: Patric Hornqvist returned to the line-up for the game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Fri 1 Feb 2019: Evgeni Malkin was ruled out for both Friday's & Saturday's games due to an undisclosed upper-body issue. He also received a maintenance day off from practice the previous day.

Wed 6 Feb 2019: Matt Murray did not take part in Wednesday's practice because he was being evaluated for an upper-body injury. It was later announced that he would not dress for Thursday's game.

Sat 9 Feb 2019: Matt Murray did not play in Saturday's game against the Lightning, but dressed & served as the back-up goalie. Nick Bjugstad suffered an undisclosed injury in the third period of the game and did not return to the game.

Mon 11 Feb 2019: Evgeni Malkin returned to the line-up for the game against the Flyers. Nick Bjugstad also returned to the line-up & scored his first goal as a Pittsburgh Penguin. Olli Maata was injured in the first period after a hit and did not return to the game. It was announced Tuesday that he would be placed on IR.

Wed 13 Feb 2019: Zach Aston-Reese was activated off IR to play in the game against the Oilers.

Sat 16 Feb 2019: Justin Schultz was activated off IR, and was in line-up for the game that night. He was credited with one assist.

Sat 23 Feb 2019: Brian Dumoulin were both injured the first period of the game & did not return for the 2nd & 3rd periods. Dumoulin received a hit from Wayne Simmonds & left the game with a concussion. Letang was apparently injured in the ensuing scrum between several players.

Tues 26 Feb 2019: Both Bryan Rust & Chad Ruhwedel exited Tuesday's game with injuries, Rust after only 4:28 of ice time, Ruhwedel after one assist & 10:52 of ice time. No details have been provided.

Sun 10 Mar 2019: Zach Aston-Reese was injured in the second period of Sunday's game & did not return for the third period.

Sun 17 Mar 2019: Evgeni Malkin missed Sunday’s game due to an jury. The injury is believed to have occurred when Malkin took a hard cross-check to the ribs. However, nothing has been confirmed.

Mon 25 Mar 2019: Kris Letang did not participate in morning skate, and did not play in Monday's game.

Tues 2 April 2019: Brian Dumoulin did not play in Tuesday's game due to an lower-body injury, no other details were given.

Sun 22 April 2018: Carl Hagelin took a big hit by Claude Giroux in game 6, round 1 against the Flyers and was hurt on the play. It was later announced that he had a concussion.

Wed 4 Oct 2017: Patric Hornqvist missed the first game of the season as he was recovering from surgery he had to repair a broken hand from the 2017 playoffs.

Sat 7 Oct 2017: Ian Cole took a puck to the face in the first period in a game against the Preds as he was dropping to block a shot. He was clearly injured on the play as he was bleeding profusely and lost several teeth. Incredibly, he did not break his jaw.

Tue 17 Oct 2017: Ian Cole returned to the lineup after missing 3 games; he was wearing a face cage to protect his injured jaw/mouth.

Tue 24 Oct 2017: Justin Shultz left in the first period in a game against the Oilers after taking an accidental elbow to the face. He was diagnosed with concussion and did not return to the game.

Tue 7 Nov 2017: Justin Shultz returned to the lineup after a 6-game absence having suffered a concussion in a game against the Oilers.

Sat 18 Nov 2017: Matt Hunwick returned to the lineup after missing 15 games with a concussion.

Wed 22 Nov 2017: Evgeni Malkin missed his first game of the season with an upper-body injury.

Injury Timeline 2016-2017[]

Wed 19 Sep 2016: Matt Murray suffers an injury during the World Cup vs Team Russia.[2] First believed to be a thumb injury, it was revealed Murray had a broken hand on 24 September. He was given a 3-6 week recovery timeline.[3]

Mon 10 Oct 2016: Sidney Crosby is diagnosed with a concussion. Status is day-to-day.[4] The injury occured Friday 7 October during a pre-season practise.

Tue 18 Oct 2016: Kris Letang leaves a game @ Montreal with an upper body injury. Conor Sheary leaves a game @ Montreal with an eye injury. Both are day-to-day.[5]

Thu 20 Oct 2016: Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta both leave a game vs the Sharks with undisclosed injuries. The nex day, Pouliot is put on IR, while Maatta is cleared to play the next game. [6]

Tue 25 Oct 2016: Matt Murray and Sidney Crosby are back on the ice for the Penguins, with Murray being Fleury's backup.

Wed 2 Nov 2016: Kris Letang returned to the Penguins' lineup after an upper-body injury.

Sat 5 Nov 2016: Conor Sheary returned to the Penguins lineup against the San Jose Sharks after an eye injury.

Wed 16 Nov 2016: Patric Hornqvist suffered a concussion in a game against the Capitals in Washington, and is considered day-to-day. Chris Kunitz suffered an upper body injury in the same game and was also considered day-to-day, but ended up playing the next two games.

Sat 19 Nov 2016: Chris Kunitz is considered week-to-week with an upper body injury.

Tue 22 Nov 2016: Derrick Pouliot is assigned to WBS on a conditioning stint.

Wed 30 Nov 2016: Patric Hornqvist returns to the lineup against the Islanders after a 6 game absence because of concussion.

Sat 3 Dec 2016: Chris Kunitz returned to the lineup after a 6-game absence.

Wed 14 Dec 2016: Kris Letang picked up a lower-body injury during a game against the Bruins and is expected to miss two weeks. Pens beat reporter Dave Molinari reported to having seen Letang with a limp in the locker room a couple of days later.[7]

Fri 16 Dec 2016: Trevor Daley and Tom Kuhnhackl both sustained upper-body injuries in a game against the Kings. Daley left the game in the 2nd period and did not return, while Kuhnhackl finished the game.

Tue 27 Dec 2016: Olli Maatta missed a game due to illness, while Brian Dumoulin left in the 3rd period with a broken jaw after taking a puck to the face.

Wed 28 Dec 2016: Olli Mattaa missed another game due to illness. Matt Murray, who started the game, left the game after the 2nd period and will be week to week with a lower body injury. Trevor Daley returned to the lineup.

Sat 31 Dec 2016: Kris Letang and Olli Maatta returned to the lineup.

Thu 12 Jan 2017: Matt Murray and Tom Kuhnhackl returned to the lineup.

Sat 14 Jan 2017: Kris Letang was injured after being driven into the boards during the first period in a game in Detroit.

Mon 16 Jan 2017: Matt Cullen was hurt in a game against the Capitals.

Tue 24 Jan 2017: Brian Dumoulin returned to the lineup while Patric Hornqvist and Evgeni Malkin were both injured during a game against the St. Louis Blues. Both managed to finish the game.

Tue 31 Jan 2017: Kris Letang returned to the lineup. Conor Sheary took a hit into the boards and got up shakily. He finished the game but will be out for some time.

Sat 4 Feb 2017: Carl Hagelin sustained a concussion after taking a hit from Alexander Steen in a game against the St. Louis Blues.

Thu 9 Feb 2017: Bryan Rust crashed into the net and sustained an upper body injury in a game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Thu 16 Feb 2017: Justin Shultz and Olli Maatta were hurt in a game against the Winnipeg Jets. Maatta broke his hand and had hand surgery the next day.

Tue 21 Feb 2017: Trevor Daley acquired a lower-body injury at some point during the second period of a game against the Carolina Hurricanes and did not return to finish the game. He had knee surgery when he returned to Pittsburgh and is estimated to be out 6 weeks. Kris Letang also picked up an upper-body injury. First believed to be day-to-day, Letang is considered 'out' for a longer period of time.

Wed 8 March 2017: The Penguins announce that Patric Hornqvist had been sent back to Pittsburgh from an extended road trip because of a concussion. It is unknown if Hornqvist was hurt in a game or practice.

Fri 10 March 2017: The Pens announced Matt Cullen would be out of the lineup.

Sat 11 March 2017: The Pens announced that Carl Hagelin would be out of the lineup. Hagelin is wearing a foot brace and walking on crutches. It's assumed he got hurt in Winnipeg and aggravated the injury in Edmonton.

Mon 13 March 2017: Mark Streit missed the third period of the game but would return for the next game in Philadelphia. Evgeni Malkin (upper body injury announced 17 March) blocked a shot where the puck hit him high in the arm.

Wed 15 March 2017: Matt Cullen returned to the lineup.

Fri 17 March 2017: Pens announced that Evgeni Malkin (day to day) and Ron Hainsey (week to week) would be out of the lineup. Patric Hornqvist returned from a concussion.

Tue 21 March 2017: Jake Guentzel was the recipient of an ugly hit from Sabres defenceman Ristolanen that had him out for the rest of the game. The Penguins announced he's been diagnosed with a concussion.

Fri 24 March 2017: Bryan Rust returned to the lineup for the first time since Feb 9. The Penguins announced Scott Wilson is out with injury.

Sun 26 March 2017: Scott Wilson returned to the lineup after only a one-game absence. Chad Ruhwedel was out of the lineup because of injury. Conor Sheary was injured on a play and did not return in the game. Brian Dumoulin took an elbow to the head but remained in the game.

Fri 31 March 2017: Jake Guenztel returned to the lineup after a concussion and missing 4 games. Ron Hainsey also returned to the lineup after missing 7.

Sat 1 April 2017: The Penguins announce that Chris Kunitz will be out of the lineup with a lower body injury. Expected to be longterm.

Tue 4 April 2017: Scott Wilson, Bryan Rust, and Matt Cullen were all injured during a game against the Blue Jackets and had to leave the bench. Only Wilson returned. None of them would miss the next game.

Wed 5 April 2017: The Penguins announced that Kris Letang is suffering from a herniated disc in his neck that will require surgery. He is estimated to be out for 4-6 months.[8]

Thu 6 April 2017: Trevor Daley returned to the lineup after knee surgery and a 20-game absence.

Sun 9 April 2017: Olli Maatta returned to the lineup after hand surgery and a 25-game absence.

Wed 12 April 2017: Evgeni Malkin returned to the Penguins lineup in time for Game 1 of the playoffs after a 13-game absence. Matt Murray was injured or re-injured during warmups before the game and did not play.

Thu 27 April 2017: Chris Kunitz returned to the lineup for game 1 of round 2 vs the Capitals. It was his first playoff game of 2017.

Mon 1 May 2017: Sidney Crosby suffered a concussion after a slash to the back of his head by Alex Ovechkin and a cross-check to the side of his head by Matt Niskanen, all on the same play.[9] Conor Sheary also suffered a concussion after colliding with Patric Hornqvist.

Sat 6 May 2017: Both Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary returned to the lineup after having been diagnosed with a concussion a piece only five days previously.

Wed 17 May 2017: Trevor Daley returned to the lineup, while Justin Shultz and Bryan Rust who were both injured the previous game, both did not play due to injury. Patric Hornqvist also did not play for the second straight game.

Fri 19 May 2017: Chad Ruhwedel got a concussion when hit in the head by Bobby Ryan's elbow.

Mon 29 May 2017: Patric Hornqvist returned to the lineup after a 6-game absence.

Wed 31 May 2017: Nick Bonino broke his tibia while blocking a PK Subban shot. He played two periods through the injury.
