Kris Letang scored a goal, his first point since returning from a herniated desk in his neck that kept him out for a significant portion of the previous season. Patric Hornqvist returned to the lineup.

Jake Guentzel scored an incredible deflection goal, and Conor Sheary had a beautiful breakaway goal. The Pens did not have a good night for their special teams, playing poorly on both the penalty kill and power play. Victor Hedman scored for Tampa with just 0.01 seconds left in the first. Tampa also managed to score while just coming out of the box after the Pens botched a power play. Antti Niemi played well despite the 5 goals against.

After scoring the first 2 goals, including one by Carl Hagelin who scored his first in 23 games, the Rangers responded with three unanswered. 2 of those came on a 4-min Sidney Crosby penalty. The Pens continued to take a large number of penalties, and had to kill off a 5on3 at one point. With 56 secs left in regulation, Crosby managed to tie the game, and Evgeni Malkin won it in overtime. Malkin also got in a fight with Shattenkirk, and had a 4-point night. Ian Cole returned to the lineup wearing a face cage.

Another review determined that what might have been a high stick was a good goal, and the Pens tied the game 3-3 with 3:37 to go in the 3rd. They wen’t on to win it 4-3.

Evgeni Malkin got his first Gordie Howe hat trick by fighting Blake Wheeler in the first minute of the game, scoring a goal (two total) and adding an assist. Tom Sestito also fought, and was ejected from the game with a game misconduct after boarding a Jets player on an ugly hit. Jets and Pens scored 5 goals in the first period alone, and 4 in the 2nd, 3 of which came in the span of 57 seconds. The Pens were down 2-3 going into the second, and up 6-3 going into the third. Nick Bonino had a hat trick. The Pens scored on several power plays, including a 5-on-3, and had a successful coach's challenge where a Jets' goal came back because of goalie interference.

Phil Kessel scored his first goal in 14 games. Sidney Crosby scored a power-play goal on a 5-on-3 man-advantage. Dalton Prout made an ugly crosscheck on Jake Guentzel that had Guentzel falling to the ice dangerously close to the goal posts. Conor Sheary was hit by the puck while still on the bench. He left to get stitches before returning. Nick Bonino scored a beautiful goal off a pretty passing play. In the last minute of play of the 2nd period, Phil Kessel got a breakaway and a penalty shot, the devils got a breakaway and a power play, and then a minor bench penalty for misconduct when the Devils coach got upset that the Devils didn’t receive a penalty shot like the Pens in what was essentially the same situation. Carter Rowney, in his 15th game, got his first NHL goal. The Pens challenged the Devils’ 4th goal for goalie interference but it was deemed a good goal (a contested decision). Crosby scored an empty-net goal. Matt Murray gave up 4 goals, but was outstanding.
