The 2015 IIHF World Championship was held in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic from 1-17 May. It was the most ever attended World Championship with a total of 741,690 people attending across all games.[1] Canada went undefeated and won the tournament, beating Russia 6-1 in the gold medal game. Sidney Crosby was the captain for Team Canada, and Evgeni Malkin was an alternate captain for Team Russia.

Both Malkin and Crosby played for their respective teams from the start of the tournament. As they were in different groups, however, Crosby played in Prague and Malkin in Ostrava until they met in Prague for the gold medal game.[2] Crosby netted a goal and an assist, while Malkin scored the Russians' lone goal.

Malkin was one of only three Russian players who remained on the ice for the Canadian anthem. Alexander Ovechkin was also there.
